Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers

Our History

Engineering For Kids has Expanded its Classroom, Bringing the Best in S.T.E.M Enrichment to Children Across the World

Engineering For Kids began when Dori Roberts, founder and CEO, noticed that there was a lack of engineering programs in the area to enroll her then 6 and 8 year old children. Dori opened her first location in 2009 and began franchising her business in 2011. Since then, Engineering For Kids has opened 145 locations in 21 countries.

Engineering For Kids continues to grow rapidly, with plans to add 30 new franchise locations in 2016. Since our inception has had over 150,000 students take a program. Our franchisees share Roberts’ passion for the program, understanding the need for fun and engaging STEM enrichment.

Meet Dori Roberts

Engineering For Kids comes from the mind of educator Dori Roberts. With an extensive educational background in math and technology education, Roberts taught engineering at the high school level for 11 years. During her teaching career, she saw a dire need for math, science and engineering programs. To fill this void, she started an afterschool club that participated in various engineering and science-based competitions.

After membership hit 180 students and the group won multiple state championships, she decided to tailor the program and apply it to a wider age demographic. With the extremely positive response she received from parents and administrators, Roberts saw a great business opportunity, leaving the teaching profession and devoting 100 percent of her time to developing the Engineering For Kids program.

Our nation is not graduating enough engineers. Our philosophy is to inspire kids at a young age to understand that engineering is a great career.

From a sound business concept into real practice, I have had this unique experience first hand. Watching room packed kids building and racing sail boats in Stafford VA with excitement made me anxious to jump start our very own Engineering For Kids in Portland OR. This is a complete Win-Win, for our children to get excited about engineering, for our teachers to acquire valuable teaching experience, and for our franchise business to be profitable.

I remember opening our learning center and seeing our first students...the faces of the children, amazed, after class saying ‘I want to be an engineer’...one parent wrote on our Facebook ‘Congratulations for your great contribution to the education of our future adults’…there are a lot of memorable moments right now.

Parents love the hands-on STEM activities. Our projects bring STEM to life, and the students love building and learning!
